Welcome! My name is Ayan Yusuf and I am interested in studying international relations with Japanese or Korean. This is because I studied Politics A Level and developed a greater understanding of the relationship between the state and the people, ideological belief systems and a historical overview. Learning about the history of America and the political systems interested me in other countries, particularly South Korea and Japan as they have a fascinating history and I want to learn the languages next summer through a language course.
I have done various internships related to my field of interest (international relations) such as the House of Commons, Mayor’s Fund for London, and Willesden County Court. Below I will be expanding on them in extensive detail:
The incredible opportunity to attend a summer school work experience at the House of Commons was extended to me by our local MP and I was able to experience the public services offered by MPs to their constituencies first hand. I was given several tasks including promoting information for the NHS Health Care checks for people, I was involved in a Brexit debate, which allowed me to openly express my views. I was given a tour of both Houses and this reinforced in me my determination to pursue a career in international relation as I understood the British political system and through my further research, I was able to understand our relations with countries such as America.
As a charity intern for the Mayors Fund, I was taught how to research and analyse data in order to decide which state schools should be considered for Access Aspiration. It was intriguing to work across projects as I learnt about the various programmes the London Mayor runs and I identified other potential businesses that would be of interest to 6th students. Being part of the Alumni Team; I schedule assemblies with schools to discuss the benefit of signing up for Access Aspirations. This has improved my confidence and public speaking skills, which are vital traits for diplomats to have. Attending Brit Court Chambers business insight days as an alumni has strengthened my passion of becoming a diplomat because I had the opportunity to further develop my interpersonal skills.
I had the opportunity to do work experience at Willesden County Court, to learn more about the cases they hear, the duties of solicitors and I was able to observe a civil case. This further enchanted my interest to work i with NGOs as there are a multitude of departments within NGOs and it allowed me to broaden my horizons.
To conclude, I hope to embark on a future journey as a diplomat in Japan or South Korea.
